Fish in an aquaponics system reside in a tank, and they create waste. While this fish waste may seem like an issue, it is highly beneficial to the plants! The plants are grown on top of the tank in a separate, hydroton-filled bed that also helps with drainage -- it turns out this clay is amazing stuff for both draining and aerating. The fish waste is rich nutrients and fertilizes delicious plants. These same plants are chomping on the nutrients cleaning up that water for fish and helping to keep things fresh. Aquaponics is a good thing as it has the potential to use only 2% of land, and has less water requirement unlike conventional farming. Aquaponics is essentially creating a mini ecosystem in your own backyard that works to the benefit of all involved. The fish and the plants assist each other in this ecosystem to grow. The fish are the source of all nutrients for plants, which in turn clean water to live into making it safe and sound. This also means that aquaponics does not need as much outside resources like regular farming. It saves the environment too as waste is reduced and fewer resources are used.
