It means that changing nature is safer if we understand how things work - so an informed scientist going to manage something and mitigate the potential harm of those changes.
The more we learn about the genetics of aquatic organisms, the better placed we are to protect them and exploit their unique capabilities for our own ends. For example, scientists are currently investigating some species of algae to determine whether we can use the organisms one day as sources for cleaner and less hazardous fuels. This is a research which helps us to get new energy sources but also responsible for the health of my planet.
